5 Day Devotional
Day 1: Recognizing Our Need
Devotional:
At the pool of Bethesda, Jesus encountered a man who had been paralyzed for 38 years. When Jesus asked him, ‘Do you want to get well?’ the man responded with excuses about having no one to help him into the pool. This reveals a deeper spiritual problem: he was trusting in superstition rather than the God who created all water. We often find ourselves in similar situations, placing our trust in worldly solutions rather than turning to Jesus. Recognizing our need for Jesus is the first step toward true healing.
Bible Verse:
‘Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed.’ – John 5:1-3
Reflection Question:
What are some areas in your life where you have been relying on worldly solutions instead of turning to Jesus?
Quote:
“If we want to get well, we have to see how unwell we are.”
Prayer:
Lord, help me to recognize my need for You in every area of my life. Open my eyes to see where I have been relying on worldly solutions and guide me to place my trust in You. Amen.
Day 2: Surrendering in Obedience
Devotional:
After recognizing our need for Jesus, the next step is to surrender in obedience to Him. Jesus healed the paralyzed man with a simple command: ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ This act of obedience was crucial for his physical healing. Similarly, our spiritual healing requires us to obey Jesus’s commands and surrender our lives to Him. Obedience is not always easy, but it is essential for experiencing the fullness of Jesus’s salvation.
Bible Verse:
‘Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.’ – John 5:8-9
Reflection Question:
In what ways can you surrender more fully to Jesus’s commands in your daily life?
Quote:
The only way that we can experience the fullness of Jesus salvation that we talk about in John 2, the only way that we experience the abundance of a life of faith in Jesus that we talked about last week at the end of John 4, the only way that we will be made well and healed of life, what truly makes us well is obedience to the one who makes us well.
Prayer:
Lord, give me the strength and courage to obey Your commands. Help me to surrender my will to Yours and to trust in Your plan for my life. Amen.
Day 3: Seeking True Healing
Devotional:
While physical healing is wonderful, our greatest need is spiritual restoration. The paralyzed man at the pool of Bethesda experienced physical healing but missed the greater healing Jesus offered. He never placed his faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior. True healing comes from seeking Jesus for what truly makes us sick – our sin. Jesus offers complete forgiveness and eternal life to all who believe, providing the only cure for our sin-sick souls.
Bible Verse:
‘Jesus said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”’ – John 5:14
Reflection Question:
Are you seeking Jesus for true healing, or are you focused on temporary, worldly solutions?
Quote:
“Sin makes our souls sick, but faith in Jesus makes us well.”
Prayer:
Lord, help me to seek You for true healing. Forgive me for my sins and restore my soul. Thank You for offering complete forgiveness and eternal life. Amen.
Day 4: Understanding Jesus’s Authority
Devotional:
Jesus demonstrated His divine authority over physical ailments by healing the paralyzed man with a simple command. However, His authority extends far beyond physical healing. Jesus has the authority to heal our souls and offer us eternal life. Understanding and accepting Jesus’s authority is crucial for our spiritual well-being. He has the power to transform our lives and make us whole.
Bible Verse:
‘Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” The eunuch answered, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”’ – Acts 8:37
Reflection Question:
“Do you fully understand and accept Jesus’s authority in your life?”
Quote:
“Jesus has the authority to heal both how and who he chooses.”
Prayer:
Lord, help me to understand and accept Your authority in my life. Thank You for Your power to heal and transform me. I place my trust in You. Amen.
Day 5: Living in Faith
Devotional:
Living a life of faith means trusting in Jesus through all circumstances. Whether He heals our bodies or not, we trust that His choice is for our good and His glory. Our faith is not based on our circumstances but on the unchanging character of Jesus. He offers us the gift of salvation, not based on our merit, but by His grace. Living in faith means accepting this gift and trusting in His plan for our lives.
Bible Verse:
‘He told him, “Go,” Jesus told him, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed.’ – John 4:50
Reflection Question:
How can you live out your faith in Jesus more fully, trusting in His plan for your life?
Quote:
“Being made well by Jesus Christ, salvation of our souls from our sins comes totally by holy grace. Jesus Christ becomes totally as a gift of God because of what God has done through His Son. We can’t earn it and we’ll never deserve it.”
Prayer:
Lord, help me to live a life of faith, trusting in Your plan for my life. Thank You for the gift of salvation and for Your unchanging character. Amen.
