Spiritual Maturity

“FROM THE PASTOR’S HEART” January 31, 2019

Jealousy and envy are things common among those who are without Christ, and should be foreign to those who claim Christ as their Savior and Lord. Unfortunately, jealousy, envy, and the strife they cause are far too common among believers. This has always been a struggle among God’s people of Israel and the body of Christ even today. The reason for this can only be attributed to spiritual immaturity that is evidenced best in not following through with God’s commands and example through Jesus. The Apostle John raised the issue in a letter he sent to Gaius. “

9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us. 10 Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, prating against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church.11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God” (3 John 9-11, NKJV).

There should be no threat of anyone else for the person who is in Christ. Those who are mature in their faith will comprehend that if the living and only true God they worship is who He claims to be, then they are loved more than they can know by the One who is in complete control (Psalm 29:1-11; Matthew 6:25-34). Jealousy, envy, and fear of others taking advantage of us is a false and useless fear that only distracts us from truth and drains precious energy needed in serving the Lord. Apostle Paul revealed the same problem of envy and strife to the Corinthian believers and proclaimed it as spiritual immaturity. “1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?” (1 Corinthians 3:1-3, NKJV). This problem is still present today with the rivalry and competition that exists among pastors, congregations, and denominations alike. These things reveal the failure of God’s people to submit to Him in authentic worship throughout each day of their lives.

The body of Christ needs to take time to fast & pray before the Lord in confession of the lack of spiritual maturity in the church evidenced by the jealousy and envy which is present currently. These actions do not lift up the name of Christ but suppress the truth behind an image of self-righteousness as the Pharisees were guilty of in Christ’s day. Therefore, “12 …may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you, 13 so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints” (1 Thessalonians 3:12-13, NKJV).
Praying beyond the physical: Father, reflect Your glory through me as I learn to trust You for tomorrow and today more than myself. Jesus, shine Your light through me as I learn to simply obey the Father in full contentment as You do. Spirit, reveal the Father’s character through me as I learn to let You have more control over me daily. Pastor Tom

Testimony of Love

“FROM THE PASTOR’S HEART” January 29, 2019

Jesus Christ is the only One who has ever lived in this world that did not have a problem with showing love. Sin has caused the image of what love is to be distorted, showing and receiving love complicated, and a means of manipulating others. Love, as God intended it to be, is the greatest and most fulfilling thing people will ever experience. This is why God commanded, explained, and has provided both examples of the proper way to show love and improper ways to give and receive love through His Word. Knowing how God loves and has called His people to love Him through worship is useless knowledge until it is acted upon. This is why John wrote to encourage and remind those in the body of Christ to love one another. “ 4 I rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth, as we received commandment from the Father. 5 And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another. 6 This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it” (2 John 4-6, NKJV).

Loving ourselves and others in the same way God has loved us is the most authentic way to express worship of God no matter where we are or what activity we are engaging in at the time. The character and presence of the Lord is best shared with a world who is in complete denial of their sin through genuine Christlike love that is shared with others. This is what John meant by, “This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it”. Love is shown most authentic in times of great stress, heartache, and trial.

Anyone can put on an air of love for a brief period of time when things are comfortable and easy. It is only when life is difficult and painful that the true nature of a person and how they actually feel about others and life in general is revealed. Are those around us seeing the Christ-like love that kept Jesus on the cross at Calvary? Is there forgiveness of the offenses others have done to us as God’s children? The climate and atmosphere of society today is providing a perfect arena for the children of God to proclaim the presence of God, His power to overcome in obedience, and the miraculous love of God that is impossible without dependence upon His Spirit. Let us not love with words only, but genuinely love as God has loved us by revealing to people the whole Gospel message with them: the perfection of God, sin and rebellion of mankind, the forgiveness and atonement of Christ, victory over sin and death through Jesus’ death and resurrection, His ascension into heaven, and the expectation of His return.

Praying beyond the physical: Father, channel Your love into me and through me by the power of Your Spirit using the challenges of this day. Jesus, teach me to follow Your perfect example of loving the Father and others in all I will endure this day. Spirit, help me to love as the Father and Son love by choosing to allow You place me in difficult situations. Pastor Tom

Strolling with God

“FROM THE PASTOR’S HEART” January 15, 2019

When was the last time someone asked you to go for a walk with them? The first question which crosses people’s minds is, “Where are we going?” There is so much wrapped up in the destination and the goal of everything that is done that the journey to get there is completely dismissed as nothing more than an inescapable hassle of getting from where you are to where it is you want to arrive. People carry this physical concept over into their spiritual lives and forget that God places as much emphasis on the journey as He does the destination and purpose.

Apostle Paul in his letter to the Colossian believers was inspired to put it like this, “6 As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. 8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power” (Colossians 2:6-10, NKJV).

The phrase “walk in Him” carries the idea of being invited on a walk by someone who gives us the destination, but has a purpose for time between the starting point and destination. As the children of God walk with the Lord through their life in this world, God is doing three things that are as important as the future destination of their soul: 1) rooting them in Himself, 2) building them up in Him, and 3) establishing them in faith. Walking with God through this life is literally making connections to and bonding with God so all a person’s dependencies shift from where they were to Christ alone. If a tree is separated from its roots it has no way of receiving the nourishment it needs to live and it will die. This is why Paul stresses that we are made complete in Him.

The idea of being “built up in Him” is when the child of God makes the priorities of God to be the priorities of their life also. Walking together with God on a daily basis is to learn about Him through talking and listening to Him throughout the day, sharing their hurts, concerns, and joys of life with Him, and to look to Him as the ultimate authority on everything. A good way to look at this is to imagine walking along at a strolling pace, not hurrying along to the destination, but enjoying the time to spend alone talking with this person who is admired and respected in life above everyone else. God’s people must be receiving fulfillment from God and His Word so that they live a life that is building a testimony to the Lord’s glory rather than a name for themselves.

The purpose of the journey with the Lord is so God’s children are “established in the faith”. This means that doubts and fears are all discarded and life is stabilized by that assurance of the eternal character of God by the presence of God’s Spirit residing on the seat of authority in the child of God. Every trial that is endured, every joy celebrated, and every fear that arises are all things God is allowing to come into the life of His people in order that they can be strengthened and know His power and grace along the way to His heavenly kingdom. The philosophy of this world and the traditions of mankind are to rush through to get to the end, meet the goal as quick as possible by any means necessary, and share nothing with anyone since they may use it to get there first. God’s people must remember that God considers the journey to spiritual maturity and sanctification just as important as the destination. If you are taking the time to walk with the Lord and allowing Him to set the pace, you will find that worship is something that is a lifestyle rather than an event that occurs occasionally.

Praying beyond the physical: Father, set the pace of this day and give me the strength to walk with You instead of ahead of You. Jesus, speak to my heart and mind through Your Word and life as we walk through the events of this day. Spirit, take all that I hear and see from the Father today and help me make it part of who I am now and forever. Pastor Tom

Worship is Submission

“FROM THE PASTOR’S HEART” January 8, 2019

Worship is submission to God in everything. How that is lived out in life is seen in the Gospel of Luke through an unlikely source. A Roman centurion sent elders of the Jews he was close with to inquire if Jesus would heal his servant that was dear to him. When the centurion heard that Jesus was on His way to his home he worshiped Christ in a unique way that demonstrates worship as being submissive to God. 6 Then Jesus went with them. And when He was already not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to Him, saying to Him, “Lord, do not trouble Yourself, for I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof. 7 Therefore I did not even think myself worthy to come to You. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 For I also am a man placed under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 9 When Jesus heard these things, He marveled at him, and turned around and said to the crowd that followed Him, “I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!” 10 And those who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well who had been sick” (Luke 7:6-10, NKJV).

Submission to God is more than what a person does. Worshiping God through submission is trusting that the Lord can do more than what we can think or imagine, and accepting that what He does is the best for everyone. The centurion realized the authority Jesus had over all things whether they are physical or spiritual. The centurion recognized that Jesus was the living God in flesh and blood walking around on earth. Therefore, Jesus merely needed to speak and it would be done. The Jews, who knew the Scriptures, neither thought this about Jesus or accepted that He was God.

The way a person talks to God speaks volumes concerning what they believe about Him. If a person does not believe God is all-powerful, they will ask things in prayer but only as a last resort. They have the idea it is something that can be handled by themselves which reveals their lack of faith in God’s concern for the smallest of things and their overcompensation of personal strength. If a person does not trust God to do what is best, they will often explain to Him how something should be done and complain to God whenever what was asked of Him turns out differently than they asked.

Worshiping God in submission is done through communication with the Lord daily just as much as it is submitting to His Spirit’s guidance in obedience to His Word. It is not wrong to pray for people to be healed, but it must not consume the majority of our conversation with God. People are going to get sick and die because this world is under a curse due to sin. We should be in prayer more about the spiritual condition of people’s hearts than we are about their physical condition. Jesus expressed this when He was teaching the disciples how to pray when He said, “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:9-10, NKJV).
Prayer can be a beautiful time of worship. Worshiping through prayer begins when we stop pleading with God to do what we think is best and accept that God’s will is perfect even if it does not line up with what we desire. Then our prayers will be more than continual speaking to God and have much more time listening to Him when we accept that God knows more about life and the circumstances we endure than what we do. Prayer that acknowledges God is who He says He is becomes a time of private worship with the Lord, and an expression of the unity of the body of Christ in public prayer. May we seek the Lord to be lifted up and known through continual worship of Him. Let us worship the Lord even in the way we speak to Him, and long to listen to Him who knows all things rather than telling Him what He already knows.

Praying beyond the physical: Father, You are my Master and Creator. Help me listen to You in humble submission throughout this day. Jesus, You are my Redeemer and King. Help me reflect Your character in all I say, do, and think today. Spirit, You are my Helper and Strength. Help me rely on You more than myself in all I encounter this day. Pastor Tom

Worship is Submission to God

Joshua 5:13-15
We join God; God does not join us.
God is the Victor
We Submit to God
God is the Victor

Joshua 5:13-14a, NKJV
And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and
looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand.
And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, “Are You for us or for our adversaries?”
So He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the Lord I have now
come.”

And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped…”
The three things that are important in the selling of property are location, location,
and location. Where a property is located dictates the amount of money that is going to be
charged for it around the world. Location is important in expounding on the passage of
Scripture since where Joshua was at the time spiritually and physically is as crucial as
what was said and done between him and the Commander of the Lord’s army. It was
“…when Joshua was by Jericho…” that he saw the Man standing opposite him.

The Israelites had crossed the Jordan as God had commanded them and were now
in the Promised Land God had given to them (Joshua 3:1-17). As the leader, Joshua
separated himself from the camp and went to survey the city God called them to conquer
first in their conquest of the Promised Land. The challenges they faced were greater than
the physical skills and resources they had as a nation. They were a nomadic nation for
the last several years and slaves in Egypt over the last several hundred years before that.
Now they were going to face the greatest challenge since leaving Egypt.
Joshua knew better than anyone what God set before them was greater than they
could ever hope to achieve. His time alone was not of strategizing but more likely seeking
how God was going to accomplish such an impossible thing. Joshua was not back in the
camp ignoring the reality of what awaited them in the coming days; he took time to
separate himself out to be alone with God. Joshua knew the promises of God when it
came to the fight they were about to engage in and sought to understand what God was
calling them to do.

God had informed the people after giving them the law on Mt. Sinai about the
conquering of the Promised Land and it would be done by the Lord and not in the
strength of the people. God proclaimed:

27 “I will send My fear before you, I will cause confusion among all the
people to whom you come, and will make all your enemies turn their backs to
you.
28 And I will send hornets before you, which shall drive out the Hivite,
the Canaanite, and the Hittite from before you.
29 I will not drive them out
from before you in one year, lest the land become desolate and the beasts of
the field become too numerous for you.
30 Little by little I will drive them out
from before you, until you have increased, and you inherit the land.
31 And I will set your bounds from the Red Sea to the sea, Philistia, and from the
desert to the River. For I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your
hand, and you shall drive them out before you. (Exodus 23:27-31, NKJV)

The Lord caused the people of Canaan to have fear of His people when they were in
human terms nothing more than nomadic slaves who escaped their slavery in Egypt.
There was no real reason for anyone to be afraid of them, especially a great walled city
such as Jericho. The people of Jericho were not so much afraid of the people, but the God
of the people of Israel who was among them. It was the fear of God the people of Canaan
felt. The creation around them turned against the people of Canaan as the hornet was
directed by God to drive the people from the land.

Joshua understood the true victory was going to belong to the Lord which is why he
was seeking the direction of God as he stood by the city of Jericho. He was coming before
the Lord in prayer. It is recorded that “…he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold a Man
stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand”. His location was being alone with
God in private; his posture was bowing before God who was going to supply the victory to
them against Jericho and the entire land of Canaan.

Being alone in solitude is good, but it is important that it is God’s direction that is
sought in those secluded times. Courage, strength, determination, and endurance are all
good things that people need to endure this life. These things are limited and fleeting if
they come from within the person or motivation by some goal. It is only when courage is
in the faithfulness of God’s promises that it is able to see a person through any challenge
they encounter. Strength is nothing if a person is empowered by anything other than
God’s Spirit within them. Determination and endurance are weak and helpless to aid the
one in need if they are working against or outside of the will of God.

Time must be taken to know the will of God and make sure that His will is the
center where everything else in life receives its meaning and purpose from. There is no
victory over sin, death, and the grave without God having provided the means of
salvation and reconciliation through Christ. Hebrews 10:19-25 records,
19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of
Jesus,
20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the
veil, that is, His flesh,
21 and having a High Priest over the house of God,
22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our
hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure
water.
23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He
who promised is faithful.
24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up
love and good works,
25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as
is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as
you see the Day approaching” (NKJV).
There is no guarantee or hope of our salvation without the Spirit of God indwelling
the hearts of His people as assurance of their confession of Christ as Lord. Apostle Paul
explained it like this,
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of
God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not
His.
10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is
life because of righteousness.
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus
from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also
give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. (Romans
8:9-11, NKJV)
5 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test
yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless
indeed you are disqualified.
6 But I trust that you will know that we are not
disqualified. (2 Corinthians 13:5-6, NKJV).

The praise for any success that is realized in life belongs to God. The Lord
establishes every nation and allows them to see greatness to serve His purposes because
He is sovereign over all powers. Even the evil nations of the world unwittingly do the will
of God in His timing and they are crushed when they do not glorify Him. The greatest
example of this in Scripture is King Melchizedek and King Nebuchadnezzar.
King Melchizedek was the priest-king over Salem which would later be called
Jerusalem during the time Abram rescued Lot and his family. Melchizedek was a priest of
God Most High before the Lord had ordained the priesthood of Aaron and his sons
(Genesis 14:18-20). This king is referred in the inspired writing of Hebrews as a
forerunner of Jesus the Christ who was from the tribe of Judah which was not associated
with the priestly family of Aaron (Hebrews 7:14-17). God had raised up a priestly king
before He established His nation through the descendants of Abram. Melchizedek’s
leadership was established by God and he honored and worshiped God even though he is
merely mentioned as intersecting with the plan of God’s salvation for the world through
Christ who would come into the world by the off spring of Abram.

God had also established King Nebuchadnezzar who did not give God glory nor
worship Him because of the power the Lord granted him and the nation he ruled over.
The Lord made it clear to Nebuchadnezzar that He was sovereign over all kingdoms no
matter how powerful they appeared to be in mankind’s estimation. Nebuchadnezzar was
warned to give God glory but when he refused the Lord said to him,
31 …“King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: the kingdom has departed
from you!
32 And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be
with the beasts of the field. They shall make you eat grass like oxen; and
seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules in
the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.” (Daniel 4:31-32,
NKJV)

God’s Word makes it clear that He is the Victor. Joshua and the people were
helpless before the Canaanite’s who lived in the land. The people of God could never
conquer the Promised Land if they attempted to do it in their own strength. This was
painfully proven to them when they attempted to go up against the city of Ai due to
Achan’s sin in Jericho (Joshua 7:1-26). Jesus also made it just as clear that no one can do
anything for the kingdom of God apart from Him (John 15:5).

The notion of God being on anyone’s side is completely against the teaching of
God’s Word. The Lord is the side people must choose to be part of because God does not
choose sides; God comes to win the victory over all His enemies and the enemies of His
people. This is exactly how the Angel of the Lord’s army replied to Joshua’s question of
who’s side He was on the way He did, “…as Commander of the army of the Lord I have
now come.” The victory is always God’s and never ours. As His creation it is crucial that
we submit to Him. It is we who must join the Lord in submission which is the act of
worship before God.

We Submit to God

Joshua 5:14b-15, NKJV
…and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?”
Then the Commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Take your sandal
off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so.
Obedience is simply compliance but it is one of the most difficult things people do
in their lives. This is especially true when what is to be submitted to is contrary to what a
person desires to do. Here we see that Joshua fell down in worship before the
Commander of the Lord’s army in submission. The authenticity of his worship was
confirmed in two things: (1) Joshua sought the will of His Lord, and (2) Joshua did as he
was commanded.

Worship as submission is revealed in action. The words of worship spoken with
praise, adoration, and even confession are only words unless they are followed up by
action. Joshua’s bowed posture would have only been an appearance of worship if there
was no action taken in confirmation of the gesture of worship. This is something that the
people of Israel and Judah were convicted of doing before God throughout the centuries.
Unfortunately, those of the church have been just as guilty of paying lip service to God
instead of genuinely worshiping Him in spirit and truth as He has called us to do through
Christ Jesus (John 4:21-24). Two of the greatest examples of this are found and recorded
in the inspired writings of the Prophet Isaiah and the Prophet Malachi.

The Lord addresses the people’s failure to worship Him from their hearts and only
appeared to worship Him in their life during His times of conviction about how they
conducted themselves when they practiced fasting. Isaiah 29:11-13 records God’s
conviction of His people giving the appearance of worship without genuine action to
support their outward claims,

11 The whole vision has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed,
which men deliver to one who is literate, saying, “Read this, please.”
And he says, “I cannot, for it is sealed.”
12 Then the book is delivered to one who is illiterate, saying, “Read this,
please.”
And he says, “I am not literate.”
13 Therefore the Lord said:
“Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths
And honor Me with their lips,
But have removed their hearts far from Me,
And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men, (NKJV)

The people were honoring God with their words but their lifestyles and attitudes of
their hearts did not match what they said. They were being taught to fear God by those
who did not fear God themselves. That is what God meant when He said, “…their fear
toward Me is taught by the command of men”. The priesthood and the office of prophet of
God had become corrupted by those who did not know God and refused to submit to His
will over their own.

Malachi was inspired to record God’s accusations of His people in this way,
13 “Your words have been harsh against Me,”
Says the Lord,
“Yet you say,
‘What have we spoken against You?’
14 You have said,
‘It is useless to serve God;
What profit is it that we have kept His ordinance,
And that we have walked as mourners
Before the Lord of hosts?
15 So now we call the proud blessed,
For those who do wickedness are raised up;
They even tempt God and go free.’ ”
16 Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another,
And the Lord listened and heard them;
So a book of remembrance was written before Him
For those who fear the Lord
And who meditate on His name.
17 “They shall be Mine,” says the Lord of hosts,
“On the day that I make them My jewels.
And I will spare them
As a man spares his own son who serves him.”
18 Then you shall again discern
Between the righteous and the wicked,
Between one who serves God
And one who does not serve Him. (Malachi 3:13-18, NKJV)

The people went through the motions of worship but only outwardly. They spoke
great things about the majesty of God, but sought the help of other nations for protection
and the assistance of false gods for guidance to satisfy their fleshly desires. The one who
worships God must submit to His commands and authority over their life in every area.
There is no compartmentalizing in the life of God’s children. Everything about them must
be sanctified before the Father so that in everything God’s Spirit has complete supremacy
over all they do, say, and think.

Joshua seeking to know what the Lord wanted of him declared he was not the one
leading the way, but it was the Commander of the Lord’s army. This is Christ appearing
in history before the Incarnation. The request of Joshua was the first thing Moses was
told when He encountered the living God in the wilderness at the burning bush (Exodus
3:1-5). It is customary in many cultures to remove the shoes before entering into
someone’s home as a sign of respect like it used to be in America of removing hats when
coming inside a home. Joshua and Moses were both outside when they were commanded
to remove their shoes because they were in the Divine Presence.
The sign of respect for God’s presence in the life of His children is genuinely
worshiping the Lord in submission to His commands. Joshua asked what it was the Lord
wanted of Him. The Commander of the Lord’s army was clear in instructing Joshua to
remove his sandals because the ground was holy. The holiness was due to God’s presence
and had nothing to do with the physical land where he stood.

As children of God we take nothing off to show our worship and acknowledgement
of God’s presence but seek His will and do what He desires. Joshua obeyed without
hesitation which is also the way the children of God ought to obey the Spirit of God
within their hearts. When God lays upon our hearts to speak, the servant of God as an
act of worship must speak whatever they are given to say. When God instructs a person
to hold their tongue, the servant of God as an act of worship should hold their tongue.
The perfect illustration of continual worship of God in all things is the life of Christ.

Jesus said,
19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you,
the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for
whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. (John 5:19, NKJV)
The lifestyle of obedience and worship of Christ is the same the children of God
should have in their life. The perfection of Christ will be certainly beyond reach for even
the regenerated heart will still struggle with sin as long as they live in this world.
Submission to God makes everything an act of worship to Him when the child of God
complies with the will of the Father in all decisions. This is why everything can be and
should be an act of worship for the children of God.

This submission to God in all things can seem overwhelming at first. It makes it
easier when we remember that Jesus made the entire law of God easy to understand in
statements like, “…whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the
Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 7:12, NKJV) and the Apostle Paul summarizes God’s
law in this way, “Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves
another has fulfilled the law” (Romans 13:8, NKJV). This applies to personal and
business dealings with people, relationships between family, friends, and strangers, and
gives guidance in all decisions whether great or small.

God desires us to worship Him in this manner. Worship is submission to God.
Worship is words, attitudes, and actions all speaking in agreement that God alone is
sovereign. Worship also helps us to deal with feelings of hurt, bitterness, sorrow, joy,
happiness, anger, and every other emotion mankind is capable of experiencing in order to
express them in a God honoring way.

Let it be clearly known that God is worshiped in these lives He has redeemed by
the blood of His Son, Jesus. Let us worship the Lord through the submission of our
schedules, emotions, words, actions, and thoughts so all that is done is a testimony to
Him and demonstration of worship of God.

But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be
false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even
denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.
In all times there has been, are, and will continue to be false teachers that will
challenge the truth wherever it is declared, lived out, and encouraged. Today in the
twenty-first century is no different than in Apostle Peter’s day during the first century of
the Church. False teachers abounded then as they do now.

The main effect false teachers have on people is generally one of confusion. They
are often not concerned what people believe, only that they are able to personally profit
by their beliefs. Apostle Paul was divinely inspired to warn Timothy that, “…the time will
come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires,
because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers…” (2 Timothy
4:3, NKJV).

There will never be a shortage of people speaking things that are untrue or people
willing to accept anything they are told as long as it is what they want to hear. The
tendency is to complain and be forlorn about the presence of these false teachers. This
kind of behavior only draws attention to the false teachers rather than convincing people
that it is the truth they are in need of in their life. Apostle Peter is neither denying the
presence of false teachers or paying too much attention to them. He is merely
acknowledging the fact that their false teaching will “…bring on themselves swift
destruction”.

The messages of these false teachers will vary in subject matter and method, but
the one thing that holds true among them all is their denial of Christ as having paid the
debt of sin owed to God to satisfy His justice and righteousness. It is important to notice
that these false teachers are going about their misleading messages. They are not
publicly stating what they truly believe but “…secretly bring in destructive heresies…”
that include denial of Christ as Lord and not limited to just that specific aspect of their
message.

Heresy can be anything that is against the accepted doctrine of a person or group.
In the Muslim world Christianity is a heresy to the follower of Islam, as Islam is a heresy
to the to the follower of Christ. Proclaiming something that is heretical is saying nothing
specific. Therefore, God’s people must be able to articulate eternal truth in a way which is
precise, clear, and confident even when encountering strong opposition to the truth. Many
who hear this are most likely thinking this directive is much easier said than done.
There are few who would consider themselves to be someone who can with grace
and confidence share the Gospel with objectors as Ravi Zacharias (https://www.rzim.org).
Some are called to proclaim the Gospel in public ways defending faith in Christ against
hostile enemies. The majority of God’s people are gifted with the message of salvation
they have received by the Holy Spirit living within them from the time of their
conversion.

The lack of knowledge and understanding is not an issue for those who share the
Gospel daily even when they are spiritually young. This is true since they share the
Gospel as they share what convinced them that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came
into the world to die for their sins and rose again to give them new life in Him as they
trust in His name for the forgiveness of sins. As God’s people mature in their faith in
Christ they are able to speak more fully of what Christ has done for them using Scripture
to support their conclusions. Those who either choose to not share what Christ has done
and allow Him to bring great change in their lives really need to consider if what they say
they believe about God is true. Truth changes lives. Truth changes actions. Truth changes
lifestyles. Truth is the guarantee that things cannot remain as they once were or cease to
bring change in attitude, speech, and perspective throughout a person’s lifetime.
The moment a person accepts the truth about who Christ is and believes on His
name for the salvation of their souls changes start taking place. Some of the change is
noticeable to those who are around the person and some changes only the person
themselves are aware of a difference. Either way, it is something that never stops once it
begins for the person who authentically gives their life to the service of Christ.
One of the greatest and most important transformations a person goes through
after coming to believe Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God who is God in the flesh is
their desire for truth. They need to hear it, know it, and proclaim it. Nothing else
satisfies them like the truth. Lies at one time were enough to appease them, but now that
the Holy Spirit is part of their lives they long to taste it again and again. It is not
falsehoods they are interested in identifying, but truth they are longing to receive and
live out.

Apostle Peter speaks of the false teachers only to share their condemnation. There
is no reason to refute them point by point. It is only necessary to allow the truth of God’s
Word to speak for itself. God’s people are actually beacons of truth. The Spirit works
through the children of God by giving them guiding points of faith, hope, and love in a
world spiritually covered with the thick fog of lies which produce nothing but confusion
and chaos. Therefore, it is the truth God’s people need to be consumed by and obsessed
with.

The majority of believers have no need in being experts on the occult, versed in the
teachings of the false religions of the world, and knowledgeable of those who are
misleading many by their desire to itch the itchy ears of people who long only to listen to
what will make them momentarily happy. It is the Bible that God’s people need to know
better than anything else. Being a beacon of truth is impossible without knowing what
the truth is or at least where to find it when questions arise in their hearts and minds or
are posed by others who challenge their standing on specific issues.
Basic knowledge of the Bible is the first step in allowing the Holy Spirit to shine
the light of Christ in this dark world. This knowledge being referred to as basic is: (1)
know by heart the books of the Bible in the order they are found, (2) have a general
understanding of the message of each book, (3) know how Christ is found in each book,
and (4) know key passages that identify what a person needs to understand about
salvation from God through faith in Christ Jesus. A few of these verses are: Joshua 24:15;
Luke 13:3; John 3:16-18, 14:6; Romans 3:23, 6:4, 23, 10:9; Acts 16:31; 2 Corinthians 6:2;
Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; James 2:10; 1 John 1:8-9. It is only when this is known in the
life of God’s people that they will shine the light of Christ in the world faithfully and
consistently while being bombarded by persecution and challenges to the truth.

Be Steadfast in Truth

2 Peter 2:2, NKJV
And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of
truth will be blasphemed.
The distortion of the truth is often more dangerous than complete lies. Those who
wage war against God are most effective when they take the truth and twist it ever so
slightly to change the meaning without removing all statements of truth. A perfect
example of this would be an offense of Scripture that is commonly done with John 1:1.
John 1:1 reads, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and
the Word was God” (NKJV). We know that the Word is referring to Christ who was with
God in the beginning and was God, eternal and not created. The New World Translation
published by the Jehovah’s Witness has John 1:1 reading, “In the beginning was the
Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god” which twists the truth by
only adding a simple letter “a” before the last word of the verse.
This robs Jesus of His deity, removes Him as a member of the Trinity, and removes
His ability to be the propitiation for mankind’s sin. If Jesus was not God in the flesh, He
could not live a perfect life. If Jesus did not live a perfect life, His death would have been
for Himself rather than others. One simple letter has voided the truth by twisting it
beyond recognition. This is what Peter is speaking of at “…their destructive ways…” in
this verse.

This is blasphemy against the truth of God’s Word. Blasphemy is a word that is not
used much if at all in the twenty-first century. Literally translated from the Greek it
means, “will be evil spoken of”. This is something that is being seen happening in the
present age of the Church with many modern issues. There are those who desire to make
Christianity socially acceptable and inclusive in order to be welcoming and hospitable to
everyone in the society no matter what they want to believe.

Being beacons of truth means that we are first and foremost steadfast in the truth.
There can be no doubt about the character of God, no question about His righteousness,
holiness, justice, love, or wrath. Suggesting that God is in any way unjust in His actions
is a denial to the Word of God and the character of God. The whole gender confusion idea
in the developed countries of the world is proclaiming that God makes mistakes in
assigning genders to people that do not match the individuals’ personality. It is not God
that is mistaken, but the sinfulness and rebellion of mankind that is being revealed.
God does what He does because it is right no matter what those who are created
think or feel about it. This understanding is not something that is difficult to see in
Scripture at all. Some verses expressing this say, “For by Him all things were created
that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or
dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him”
(Colossians 1:16, NKJV). “The Lord has made all for Himself, Yes, even the wicked for the
day of doom” (Proverbs 16:4, NKJV). “There are many plans in a man’s heart,
Nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand” (Proverbs 19:21, NKJV). “The counsel
of the Lord stands forever, The plans of His heart to all generations”(Psalm 33:11, NKJV).
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who
are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28, NKJV).

What needs to be understood is the Word of God rather than the culture
surrounding the body of Christ. Culture is expressing the same sinfulness as it has
always done. As Solomon was inspired to put it, “That which has been is what will be,
That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun”
(Ecclesiastes 1:9, NKJV). There may have been changes in culture, technology, and ways
in which people do things but the basic lusts of the flesh and self-centeredness of
mankind has not and never will change unless a person surrenders themselves over to
the authority of God over their life.

It is crucial that God’s people know the truth, are convinced of the truth, and are
passionate about the truth. There is no other way in which a person can stay grounded in
the truth against the subtle and lethal lies and twisting of the truth that is so prevalent
in the world. It is not worse than it has ever been today. Each generation of God’s people
have had to deal with the deception of false teachers as Peter made clear in the first verse
of this chapter. What makes it seem worse is the lack of commitment to learning and
knowing the truth in the life of the congregation. Being committed to the truth will equip
the people of God to fight with the weapons of God as Apostle Paul referred to them, “For
the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down
strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the
knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ” (2
Corinthians 10:4-5, NKJV)

The power and effectiveness of the truth is without question. Lies are revealed in
the light of truth. Ideologies and religious teachings that are contradictory to the Word of
God are crushed under the weight of truth when presented. This is why it is vital for
everyone who claims to be a follower of Christ to be involved in a Bible study with other
believers. This does not mean that personal time with the Word of God is unnecessary or
eliminated. Both private study and gathering with others to study the Word of God is
critical to the growth and stamina of the body of Christ.

Many reasons are given for the lack of personal study of God’s Word and
withdrawing from joining with others to study Scripture together. There are many things
that get in the way. Time restraints, dealing with distractions of small children, and work
schedules are all certainly valid reasons for lack of participation. Yet, the cost of not
knowing the truth and the deadliness of the lies the enemy is speaking are all reasons to
make the time. Are we to allow the enemy to dictate how much time we give to God? It is
time for the body of Christ to claim the victory of Christ over the time God has given us
and make whatever changes that are needed and allow God to be Master over the time
He has given to His people.

Start a Bible study with another couple or family in your home. Singles, gather
together with other believers at a coffee shop or restaurant and discuss passages of
Scripture together. Make blocks of time in your day personally and in your week as a
family that are set so that everything else works around that schedule rather than giving
God the leftover time of the day and week.

There are many helps to get you started with studying the Bible privately and with
others. There are things you can look for in the passages you read and discuss with
others or journal about for yourself: Sins to Confess, Promises to Claim, Actions to Avoid,
Commands to Obey, and Examples to Follow (S.P.A.C.E). There are questions that you
can ask once you finish reading a passage of Scripture to help you think about,
understand, and apply what you just read: (1) What is God instructing me to do? (2) What
can I thank God for after reading this passage? (3) What do I need to confess and repent
of after reading this passage of Scripture? (4) How can I practically apply this to my life?
These are just two of the many ways to simply start discovering the benefits of
knowing the truth and standing firm in the truth. The world needs to know the truth
since God is going to be bringing judgment upon those who are living in rebellion to their
Creator.

Be Confident in God’s Judgment

2 Peter 2:3, NKJV
By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time
their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.
It is impossible to know truth apart from God. Christ was truth in the flesh as
Jesus made clear when He said, “…I am the way, the truth, and the life…” (John 14:6,
NKJV). All that is contrary to the Word of God is therefore not true. All that is in the
Word of God, regardless of people’s acceptance of it or ability to understand it. This
means everything that God says is without error or flaw. There is no lie God has ever said
since it is impossible for Him to lie, and has never broken a promise (Numbers 23:19).
There are many who ignore large portions of Scripture because it proclaims
judgment, reveals God’s wrath, or causes people to be uncomfortable with what is said in
the Bible. Apostle Peter is confirming that God is actively and will in the future bring
judgment upon those who are exploiting the people of God with their deceptive words in
an attempt to lead them away from the truth. The greater danger for many in the body of
Christ is being so distracted by the twisting of truth and focusing on challenges to the
truth they forget God is the One who will judge them rather than we as His people.
Peter is inspired to make it clear in what he is writing that the condemnation of
those attacking and distracting the body of Christ is guaranteed. They will not escape the
wrath of God, but suffer under it if they do not turn to the Lord and find forgiveness
through faith in Christ Jesus. The most powerful way to combat the lies and enemies of
God and the body of Christ is to know the truth and live in the truth so that God can be
trusted to execute the truth in the proper time and measure.

The book of Esther is a perfect example of how God works behind the scenes and
through His influence over creation. Take some time to read the book of Esther, especially
if you have never read it before. God used a young Jewish girl to save the Jews from
annihilation in the province of Persia. This orphan girl raised by her relative Mordecai
who was a scribe for the king became queen. A man in the court of the king named
Haman was upset at Mordecai for his unwillingness to show him respect he deserved
from Mordecai. His plan was to hang Mordecai but also wipe out all the Jews throughout
the whole empire of Persia. That was Haman’s plan.

God’s plan brought the death of Haman and his family, great victory for His people,
and many to come in Persia to turn from their idols and worship Him. “The Jews had
light and gladness, joy and honor. And in every province and city, wherever the king’s
command and decree came, the Jews had joy and gladness, a feast and a holiday. Then
many of the people of the land became Jews, because fear of the Jews fell upon them”
(Esther 8:16-17).

God is often doing more behind the scenes in the world than is demonstrated in
miraculous signs and wonders in the world. The raising of the dead, fire falling from
heaven, and people being swallowed up by the earth are rarely seen in the twenty-first
century. This does not mean that God is absent from life or is no longer involved with
what is going on throughout the course of an ordinary day. The opposite is true. God is
involved and actively working in every person’s life in some way that brings about His
purposes.

What we are witnessing in the world and call chaos is nothing more than people
desperately trying to avoid the authority of God over them, escape His wrath, and
convince themselves of lies by shouting down and eliminating all they can of anything
that is truth. They are getting away with nothing before God. Every idle word is being
recorded by God (Matthew 12:36). It is the ministry of the body of Christ to proclaim
reconciliation to the world (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). The Church is responsible for going
into all the world and making disciples of all nations, baptizing them, and teaching them
the truth (Matthew 28:19-20). These things are impossible if God’s people do not know
and accept the whole truth.
Hell is waiting for all who do not know Christ Jesus as Savior and Lord of their
lives, having their names written in the Book of Life (Revelation 20:11-15). God does not
make His people responsible for what people choose to do with the truth they have been
given. God’s people are responsible to proclaim the truth faithfully. Therefore, God’s
judgment and wrath cannot be forgotten, ignored, or explained away. The love, mercy,
and grace of God must never be shared without telling of God’s righteousness and
holiness in comparison to mankind’s sinfulness.

Speaking truth means that the whole truth is spoken, that which is pleasant and
that which is harsh. One without the other is a lie. It is only when a person knows God
personally and commits themselves to studying and proclaiming the truth will they be
able to stand firm in the truth. Those who stand in truth will radiate with the brightness
of the truth in this dark world and warn others of their destruction if they do not turn in
complete surrender to God for the forgiveness of their sins.

It is time. No matter what your knowledge of Scripture is currently, there is always
need to know more. All of God’s people need to be theologians, that is people who study
God’s Word. As the end of 2018 approaches, make plans to place God the center of your
schedule, the Bible as the only rule of faith and practice of your life, and study of the
Bible privately and with others as part of your normal routine.

Baptized in Obedience

“Baptized in Obedience”

Matthew 3:13-17
Baptism is an issue of obedience to God, not a matter of salvation.
Baptism is a Conscious Choice
Baptism is a Matter of Obedience
Baptism is a Public Declaration
Baptism is a Conscious Choice
Matthew 3:13, NKJV

Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.
Jesus did everything with intention. He operated under the direction of the Father
through the instruction of the Holy Spirit in the same way all of God’s people ought to be
living their lives. Jesus expressed this when He spoke with the Pharisees by saying,
“…Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do
nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also
does in like manner. For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He
Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel…I
can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do
not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me” (John 5:19-20, 30, NKJV).
Everything that is done outside of God’s will is of the person’s personal desire and
preferences. Jesus is saying that He does what the Father desires rather than what He
desires when He proclaims He “…can do nothing of Himself…” and “…I can of Myself do
nothing…”. Jesus chose to do what He saw the Father doing and what the Father desired
for Him to do. This also made the judgments of Jesus consistent with the perfect and
righteous judgments of the Father in heaven who sent Jesus into the world to do the
Father’s will rather than His own will.

The first step of beginning the ministry God the Father sent His Son to accomplish
was to identify with the lives of those He came to save from the bondage of sin. This
meant participating in the baptism of repentance. Jesus had nothing of Himself from
which He personally needed to repent from, but He was going to be taking on the sins of
the world to receive the full wrath of God on sin for sinners (Romans 5:6-10).
John the Baptist did not invent or come up with the idea or concept of baptism.
The washing with water to ceremonially cleanse a person was given by God in the Law.
In the celebration of the Day of Atonement the command to wash as a manner of
cleansing was something that was common. Leviticus 16:26-28, “And he who released the
goat as the scapegoat shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward
he may come into the camp. The bull for the sin offering and the goat for the sin offering,
whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the Holy Place, shall be carried
outside the camp. And they shall burn in the fire their skins, their flesh, and their offal.
Then he who burns them shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and
afterward he may come into the camp” (NKJV, emphasis added). The concept of water
being used for cleansing was given to the people by God early on when He introduced His
laws to them as His people. Those who became ceremonially unclean were provided a
means of becoming ceremonially clean again.

It is recorded in Exodus 30:17-21 Aaron and the other priests were to wash their
hands and feet in the bronze basin before entering into the tabernacle, approaching the
altar to serve, and prior to presenting burnt offerings. Disobedience made a person
unclean and in need of cleansing. Bodily discharges also in connection with a disease,
menstruation, and child birth were also considered unclean (Leviticus 13:34, 15:8-12, 19-
24). There were many washings due to uncleanness. Places to wash were publicly
provided for in such places like the Pool of Siloam and Bethesda which are regarded by
many New Testament scholars as being places for people to perform ceremonial
washings. Understanding this gives insight to the significance of Jesus telling the blind
man to, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went and
washed, and came back seeing” (John 9:7, NKJV).

This understanding of ritual washing was understood as making oneself suitable
for the presence of God. It is the washing off of uncleanness and provides the one washing
with a sense of newness. In each case there is a choice made by a person to be cleansed
before the Lord for service and the ability to worship Him. Jesus’ choice to go into the
waters of repentance was in obedience to the will of the Father in preparation to be the
ultimate sacrifice as the Lamb of God who would take away the sin of the world (John
1:29).

Therefore, Jesus going to John the Baptist in the beginning of His ministry was
done from a knowledge of what He had been sent into the world to do. Jesus told Pilate
when He stood before his judgment, “…You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I
was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the
truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice” (John 18:37, NKJV emphasis added).
The Gospel writer John was inspired to describe Jesus as, “And the Word became flesh
and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the
Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14, NKJV emphasis added).

The truth is, mankind is hopelessly and helplessly lost in their sinful nature with
only one means of salvation available. Salvation from the wrath of God is only through
the grace of God through faith in Christ Jesus who became sin for people to pay the
penalty for sin once and for all (Psalm 14:1-3; Romans 3:21-26; 2 Corinthians 5:20-21).
The truth about life is that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, but the
gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord who saves us from the wrath of the
Father on sin (Romans 3:23, 6:23). Jesus willingly identified with people in their
sinfulness so that He could be the sacrifice for sin on their behalf.

The baptism of repentance that John performed was different from the ceremonial
washing or the symbolic washings found in Jewish traditions. It is also different from the
believer’s baptism that is practiced by much of the Church. John’s baptism was a,
“…confession of sin and of the need of moral cleansing, and was a symbol of forgiveness
and of moral purity…”… but did not imply entrance into [the kingdom of God] itself” as
the baptism of believers practiced by the Church (ISBN: 0-8028-3781-6, pg. 418). Jesus
was coming to John for baptism out of a need to be connected with mankind who He
would die on behalf of who were in need of moral cleansing, forgiveness, and moral purity
in their lives. This is impossible for people to know and experience until they in faith turn
to Christ in acceptance of their sinfulness and His sinless offering to God on their behalf.
It is for this reason those who confess their faith in Christ as the Son of God,
believe He was killed for their transgressions, and raised bodily on the third day from the
grave, ascended into heaven, and is returning just as He promised must follow Jesus into
the waters of baptism out of obedience to publicly proclaim their confession of faith.

Baptism is a Matter of Obedience

Matthew 3:14-15, NKJV
And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You
coming to me?” But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is
fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.

The confusion for John was that Jesus was coming to Him for a baptism of
repentance when there was nothing that He had to or ever would need to repent of in His
own life. John recognized his need to be baptized by Jesus rather than to baptize Jesus.
John knew what his calling to ministry was under the authority of God. “…I am
‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way of the Lord,” ’…I
baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know. It is He
who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to
loose…I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. I
did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom
you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the
Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God” (John 1:22-34,
NKJV).

John the Baptist was approximately six months older than Jesus who was related
to him through Mary (Luke 1:11-17, 36-37). The prophecies surrounding John and Jesus’
birth had to have been known at least among the family as they were growing up. There
does not seem to have been interaction between Jesus and John prior to their encounter
at this time of Jesus’ baptism. Yet, they had some knowledge of one another from the
conversation that was recorded by Matthew.’

Jesus persuaded John to baptize Him by saying, “…for thus it is fitting for us to
fulfill all righteousness”. There are three words that stand out which need to be
understood in order to comprehend the obedience issue that is of concern for those who
have committed their life to following Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord.
Jesus said it is fitting. The Messiah is described by the writer of Hebrews as,
“Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise
shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of
death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their
lifetime subject to bondage. For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give
aid to the seed of Abraham. Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren,
that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make
propitiation for the sins of the people. For in that He Himself has suffered, being
tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted” (Hebrews 2:14-18, NKJV).

It was proper for Jesus to come to John to be baptized since He was made like people in every
way in order to be a sacrifice on their behalf. Jesus’ baptism was a symbol of His
connection with people who were hopelessly lost in their sin who in His perfection would
supply them with the means of redemption they so desperately were in need of receiving.
Jesus also said His baptism was to fulfill. All that Jesus did and said during His
earthly ministry was spoken of by the prophets of the Old Testament as signs for them to
look for and be able to identify the Messiah of God when He arrived. Isaiah 53:8-9
proclaimed, “He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His
generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My
people He was stricken. And they made His grave with the wicked—But with the rich at
His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth” (NKJV).
Jesus is the Suffering Servant spoken of in Isaiah 52:13-53:12. His death brought
forgiveness to those who belong to God because there was no sin found within Him, even
though Jesus died condemned as a criminal. People are law breakers; God is the Lawmaker
who satisfied the law in Himself. This has provided redemption from the wrath of
God on sin because Jesus suffered condemnation from God on their behalf. Jesus
therefore fulfilled what was said about Him by coming before John to be baptized in the
waters of repentance.

Lastly, Jesus said it was to fulfill righteousness sake. Jesus identifies Himself as
the righteous Judge when He said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and
now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live.
For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself,
and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man”
(John 5:25-27. NKJV). Jesus proclaimed the need to be baptized with the waters of
repentance to be connected with sinful mankind as their perfect sacrificial Lamb before
God the Father. Christ judged the sin of all mankind by entering into the waters of
repentance Himself. The righteous act of obedience was all part of God’s plan which is
why Jesus insisted that John baptize Him.

Baptism is also a matter of obedience for those who follow Christ as Savior and
Lord of their lives. Publicly entering into the waters of baptism is a proclamation of the
change God has brought about in a person’s life and their commitment to worship and
service of God. Jesus accepted the ministry of the cross to die on behalf of mankind, and
people are called to accept the cross of Christ proclaiming our death with Him and life in
Him through the ordinance of baptism.

Baptism is unnecessary for salvation which is evidenced by Apostle Paul in
Romans 10:9-10, “…if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your
heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one
believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation
(NKJV). Jesus also speaks of the requirement of being welcomed into the kingdom of God
when He said, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of
heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven” (Matthew 7:21, NKJV) and
“…“Who is My mother, or My brothers?” And He looked around in a circle at those who
sat about Him, and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the
will of God is My brother and My sister and mother” (Mark 3:33-35, NKJV).

The one who places their trust and faith in Christ should never be overly concerned
about performing or under-performing for God since salvation has nothing to do with
works but is completely based on the grace of God through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). This
was confirmed by the exchange between Jesus and the one thief who was being crucified
with Jesus who said, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” And Jesus
said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:42-
43, NKJV). The thief had a short time to live without any opportunity to do anything in
the service of others or Christ, but simply by faith was guaranteed by Jesus that he
would be with Him where He was going.

Those of this world have convinced many people that their faith is a private matter
and should not be shared with anyone. Jesus makes it clear in the passages of Scripture
that have been touched upon that it is a matter of public obedience to proclaim faith in
Christ. Denying Christ on this earth is not only rejection of Him but also remaining silent
about Him. Jesus said, “For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter
against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; and ‘a man’s
enemies will be those of his own household.’ He who loves father or mother more than Me
is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.
And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me” (Matthew
10:35-38, NKJV). Baptism is the perfect way to proclaim faith in Christ since it publicly
proclaims your sinfulness, Christ’s death on your behalf, and His redemption of your life.
Baptism is a Public Declaration
Matthew 3:16-17, NKJV

When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water;
and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from
heaven, saying, “This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Matthew records that Jesus came up immediately from the water. This clearly
reveals that Jesus was immersed in the water. This was a full commitment to the will of
the Father that He chose to be committed to out of obedience. Then there was the audible
voice of God proclaiming from heaven, “This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well
pleased”. Jesus’ obedience also brought about visible confirmation of the Father’s words
by “the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him”.

These were more than comfort and confirmation to Jesus personally, but also a
public proclamation of Jesus literally being the Son of God. We must never forget that
Jesus was completely human as well as completely God at the same time. It was for this
reason the devil attempted to tempt Jesus by sowing doubt into His heart as He once
before did with Adam and Eve. The serpent said to the woman, “… “Has God indeed said,
‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” and later said to Jesus, “…If You are the
Son of God, command that these stones become bread” (Genesis 3:1, NKJV; Matthew 4:2,
NKJV). Jesus was told by God at His baptism that He was His Beloved Son and that He
was pleased with Him. Yet the first thing the devil challenges Jesus with after He has
been alone for forty days is “…If You are the Son of God…”.

The most frustrating thing about following God is what happens when a public
proclamation of faith in baptism or testimony of the salvation found in Christ is made by
a person. There is a flood of temptation and struggle that comes after publicly identifying
oneself as a follower of Christ. The struggle is caused by the declaration of war against
the principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this age, and the spiritual hosts of
wickedness in the heavenly places that baptism and testifying to salvation of the Lord
makes. God’s people are a threat to the kingdom of darkness and will be fought against in
order to minimize the growth of the kingdom of God by way of people coming to faith in
Christ Jesus.

Those who choose to be disobedient to the Lord’s direction to proclaim their
allegiance to Him in baptism and testifying of the Lord to others miss out on seeing God
do the miraculous through them and in their lives. They choose to build upon the
foundation of Christ with wood, hay, and straw as Apostle Paul spoke about in 1
Corinthians 3:12-15, “Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious
stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it,
because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is.
If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s
work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire”
(NKJV). These individuals are still part of the kingdom of God, but did not build on the
foundation of Christ in their lives. They are more concerned with their comfort rather
than serving God with a genuine desire to see Christ lifted up in their lives so others
would be drawn to Him in repentance.

The announcement that Jesus was God’s Son by the Father from heaven was the
fulfillment of Psalm 2:7, “I will declare the decree: The Lord has said to Me, ‘You are My
Son, Today I have begotten You” (NKJV). The willing obedience of God’s people and their
public proclamation of faith is what undeniably reveals God through them. The apostles
had this same attitude and refused to stop doing what they knew God had commanded
them to do in spite of the cost and discomfort they had to endure. The high priest threw
the apostles in prison, but God sent His angels to release them and instructed them to
continue preaching the name of Jesus (Acts 5:17-21). Their miraculous escape from prison
and strength to do what was impossible for them came through the Holy Spirit’s power to
help them do what they could not do themselves.

The high priest questioned them saying, “…Did we not strictly command you not to
teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to
bring this Man’s blood on us!” But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We
ought to obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:28-29, NKJV). The world is still telling the
people of God to stop speaking about Jesus and the salvation and forgiveness that He
offers to all who will place their faith in Him as the Son of God.
If you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, God in the flesh, who took all
your sins upon Himself when He died for you in your place, that God raised Him from the
dead on the third day, after which He ascended into heaven, and is preparing to return
again, will you publicly proclaim your faith and submission to His will today in the
ordinance of baptism?

New Things Daily

“FROM THE PASTOR’S HEART” September 5, 2018

Good afternoon everyone,

The joy of “beginnings” is something that brings joy even to the most negative person. This is something
that struck me as I began my first class of Old Testament Foundations for continuing education in order to keep
my credentials current. It is also thought about as we wait upon the arrival of our fourth grandchild. New
beginnings are wonderful even though it is a change to something that once was. Often times we forget that the
creation was a major change in the history of eternity as it were.

The one thing that caught my attention this morning as I read over this text is what God first created
after the foundation was laid for creation: “Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God
saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the
darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day” (Genesis 1:3-5, NKJV).

The creation of light is more than the physical thing that enables people to see by and the effects of it
that can be felt. The division of light and dark is the creation of time as we know it in 24 hour segments of
the changes between light and dark. The Hebrew word used here is yôm which means day or cycle of 24 hours
or the span of a person’s life when plural (Exodus 20:8-11; Psalm 90:10). The definition and meaning of this
word is accepted everywhere else in the Bible by nearly everyone, but is fantasized into many other things here
in the account of creation. This will continue to be debated, but my point here is that God created time itself in
preparation of the rest of creation. This has significance to us today because with each new day there are new
beginnings.

“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new
every morning; Great is Your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23, NKJV). The mercies of God and His
unfailing compassion on people are seen each day when they are intentionally sought after in all
circumstances. Time allows these things to be measurable for us so that we are introduced to them on a
consistent basis. Are mercies of the Lord something that is sought after, or are they being taken for granted with
each new day?

“O Lord, be gracious to us; We have waited for You. Be their arm every morning, Our salvation also in
the time of trouble” (Isaiah 33:2, NKJV). The graciousness of the Lord is seen every morning in the joy of
His salvation through faith in Christ by the way the Holy Spirit sustains through the abuse, apathy, and
mistreatment others bring against those who love God. The temptation is to focus on the negative things of the
world and hurts that have been inflicted both physically and emotionally. This is something that is not noticed
often here in the United States currently, but is being experienced by missionaries serving in Europe that are
often overlooked as not ministering in difficult areas. For instance one missionary family from Sweden shares
their struggles they personally deal with in their service to the Lord.

There are many things in this world which will turn the focus off of the Lord and destroy the joy He has
provided for His people in their hearts daily. Take time today to look for the new things God is showing you
today.

Praying beyond the physical:
Father, help me to see faith in You is not stagnant but vibrant and growing with each new day.
Jesus, help me to see that Your Word has instruction for what to do but also what to look for to see the Father.
Spirit, help me to see the direction clearly that You are giving me in what You are doing all around me daily.

Why Fear

“FROM THE PASTOR’S HEART” September 11, 2018

Good morning everyone,

Today is Patriots Day when we remember the attacks and the heroic efforts of all the people who gave
their lives to protect and rush in and help those who were injured and dying. September 11, 2001 seems so long
ago. Much has happened since those planes crashed into the twin towers, pentagon, and flight 93 crashed in
western Pennsylvania. I reflected on this morning during my devoted time with the Lord in His Word. It was
interesting the Holy Spirit had brought me to Isaiah 41:11-16, “Behold, all those who were incensed against you
Shall be ashamed and disgraced; They shall be as nothing, And those who strive with you shall perish. You
shall seek them and not find them—Those who contended with you. Those who war against you Shall be as
nothing, As a nonexistent thing. For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, Saying to you, ‘Fear not,
I will help you.’ “Fear not, you worm Jacob, You men of Israel! I will help you,” says the Lord And your
Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. “Behold, I will make you into a new threshing sledge with sharp teeth; You
shall thresh the mountains and beat them small, And make the hills like chaff. You shall winnow them, the wind
shall carry them away, And the whirlwind shall scatter them; You shall rejoice in the Lord, And glory in the
Holy One of Israel” (NKJV, emphasis added).

There is much time and effort put in to planning and developing systems that teach on how to deal with
the attacks against the Church by government, society, and the spiritual forces in this world. It has mostly been
wasted time because God has given the Church what it’s focus is to be on, “Go therefore and make disciples
of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them
to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Amen” (Matthew 28:19-20, NKJV). This could not be any clearly spoken, yet it is something that is being
proclaimed today as the latest and greatest idea of the modern day church gurus.

God’s people must be involved in society and the issues of the times, but their involvement is not solely
to save the environment, save the animals, right society’s wrongs, and to eradicate poverty. All these things are
good and we ought to be involved with them as stewards of God’s creation and ambassadors of Christ as He has
called and equipped His people but they become wrong when the salvation of people becomes a second or third
priority for the body of Christ. Salvation of people and growing in Christ-likeness is to be the highest
priority of God’s people. Involvement in this world should always have this as the end result of all that is done
and said by those who are followers of Jesus Christ. Eternity is at stake and there is no room for halfhearted
efforts in serving the Lord (Matthew 10:32-39; Luke 14:25-27).

How does this practically play out in the life of God’s child? First, make the things of God (prayer,
worship, and the study of God’s Word) the main priorities which all other things are scheduled around. This is
done by loving God first and then others as yourself as God has commanded us to do (Matthew 22:37-40). Start
by carrying out the instructions of God through the Apostle Paul in Romans 12:9-21 and Philippians 4:8. If
you have been struggling with your faith and how to deal with the world, this is an excellent place to begin.
There is no reason to waste time trying to counteract the attacks of the world. God said He would bring our
enemies to nothing; He would protect us with His mighty right hand. Do not worry or fear, God has you in
Christ with Him in the heavens where others can do us no eternal harm even though they cause pain in the
present.

Praying beyond the physical:
Father, help me to deal with others today with the same love, forgiveness, and compassion You have shown me.
Jesus, help me to act and speak like You through the challenges and strife I will face this day.
Spirit, help me to trust that the promises of the Father are still faithful and true today as they were in the past.
